final class material post..

Since we've covered Search Engine Optimization in class I just wanted to chat about it for a few. Since searching is the second most popular thing done online (email first), alot of companies are looking for ways to reach their audiences in searches. Due to this goal, companies like Google have created ways for key search words to result in a hit for a particular company. Adwords, Google's program, is one of the biggest SEO tools out there today. It was definately nice to actually see the program in action while in class, where one can even set a daily budget and pick the actual keyword to link to one's website. This also goes into "google juice," which affects SEO by the ranking of which one's website turns up in search results. Apparently, my blog doesn't have much juice..haha.

post on class material..

This article was covered shortly after the Virginia Tech tragedy last month, and it came across as very important to me. The article discusses how long it took Virginia Tech to notify its students of the situation at hand, for mediums like email and blogs on the school website were used instead of faster things such as text messages. In class we made the argument that the new instant tools should be used, and there is no doubt in my mind that if the students had received mass text messages then the result would have been different. I came across another article that revealed 16.6 million students have cell phones, which is nearly 95% of the college student population. Because of this startling statistic, schools such as Florida, Penn State, and Syracuse have either installed or are considering to install this pricey, yet effective, means to alert students.

Last required blog :-)

Ok so we all love Google, but I came across this article through John Battelle's Searchblog that alerts consumers of a recent court action where Google background checks are legal in finding potential employees. First of all, I didn't know that Google can contain so much incriminating evidence on one person. But hey, in a day and age with blogging and pretty much everything on the internet i guess its possible. The judges agreed that the internet isn't any different than other background search methods and that it shouldn't be scrutinized. I definately disagree with this ruling, for I do not trust the validity of some of the things on the internet. I would hate to be denied employment or, even worse, fired over something said about me on the internet. There are probably hundreds of people with my same name out there, just like this guy.

Required Blog...

I came across this article that talks about Google Local and Superpages, something we also covered in class a month or so ago. The blog simply talks about how businesses neglect to take advantage of this popular feature and, if they do, even correct information that could be wrong. Alot of the URL's for some of the searched criterion are incorrect, and the blog urges those to correct information as soon as possible. A comment also states it could take between six weeks and six months to finally correct. I definately find this article important for the services Google offers are vital to running a business, and that if a business is not listed or has incorrect information that it be fixed as soon as possible.

Phillies Wikipedia article evolution

I'm sorry to admit it, but I love the Phillies. I was hoping to add good news to the article, but a bad season so far has not allowed me to do that. My first edit consisted of updating info on Veteran's stadium, which was the old stadium in which the Phillies played. I also added info to the 2007 season, including the projected starting lineup. My second edit consisted of updating information on the current season, which consisted of updating the Phillies' current season record and adding information to the 2007 season heading about their terrible 4-11 start. My edit last evening updated some of my own edits, changing some grammar and updating things to relate the past tense. I also added information on a former coach John Vukovich, who recently passed away. So, as far as a reaction the only changes are to the current season record, which would need to be changed to reflect the ongoing season. Information on the horrible start and projected lineup are still there. Check out the article.

Dallas Cowboys wikipedia evolution

Its obvious that I love this football team, so therefore with the football season ending I had to pick an article about them. My edits consisted of updating information on the Franchise history section and updating player and roster information as they came available. I even added information on new coaches once they were hired, and touched up grammar where necessary in this extremely large article. As far as the community reaction, my edits still remain until this day, except for the information added to the "2006 season" section being moved onto an entirely different article. With the upcoming season, I anticipate some of my edits to the coaches and players to change, for some may no longer be with the team at a later date. Check out this cool page.

Friday night lights Wikipedia article evolution

First off, this show is awesome if you never watched it. It started this past fall and immediately grabbed my attention. Anyway, each time I edited the article I updated information that had changed as the show went on, including new character bios and updated character information. My edits were unchanged for the most part, except where even more characters were added and some were put into a "Secondary Roles" section. On the whole, this article went from a baby in February, to a large article full of alot of information by the end. This was most likely due to its growing popularity over the semester. Ratings, Awards, and Deleted Scene headings were added since I started on the article.

Thomas' Wikipedia article evolution

I first randomly chose this article because I loved the product so much. I then came to find that the article on Wikipedia had hardly been touched. So I updated some information on its Bagelbread product, which was untouched by anyone else. In addition to updating general information and even adding a picture, I put some things about english muffins on it last evening. So today I look at the article and, come to find out, some ***hole deleted my picture and headings on Bagelbread and English muffins, stating it was blatant advertising. This ****ed me off, but I can understand that the image may have been copywritten. Oh well, I guess this is how Wikipedia works. Check out the now plain article.

my blog

Well I just added Google's adsense and Amazon's affiliate program, although I don't expect to get any money from them (suprising things have happened). So as you can tell I've put alot into my blog tonight and will do more work in the coming days. This is because the semester is almost over and I am about to graduate. My blog is very simple, although I hope that you see it as more than a dull webpage. I have edited wikipedia pages on two of my favorite sports teams, the Phillies and Cowboys, to which I hope have great upcoming seasons. In closing, I hope you've enjoyed my blog and the things that I've posted on it.

Last Wikipedia edit

For the Philadelphia Phillies Wikipedia page, I cleaned up alot of things like I did on the Cowboys page. I changed alot of things written to reflect past tense and added a few tidbits. You can see them here.

3rd Cowboys edit

I rearranged some info in the "franchise history" section of the article, doing some grammar clean up and making the article flow much better. You can check it out here.

3rd Thomas' edit

I edited the Thomas' wikipedia article. I simply added more information on one of its most popular products, English muffins. Check it out

Phillies!!!!

I made an edit to the Philadelphia Phillies wikipedia page. I just updated some things on the current season and made a few grammatical changes here and there. I did, however, forget to sign into Wikipedia...but my IP address is on there at 68.85.99.89. As a note all of my roommates and some of my neighbors use that same IP address. But anyway I hope I'm still ok. Go Phils!!!

second posting on required blogs

Since alot of students use Youtube and the site is making headlines with a recent lawsuit, I see this article being very relevant to many college students. As 2008 comes near, the elections are heating up. YouTube, seeing the urge to help, is in the opening stages of launching a "CitizenTube" section of the site, which will contain videos for candidates in the 2008 elections. Since a novice user can find YouTube a little disorganized, putting all of the election videos in one easy-to-use section will definately increase pageviews and allow for addition ad revenue. No timetable was given in the blog but I definately am excited to see what YouTube has in store for us.

i just had to comment on this

Today in class we went over Youtube(Google) vs. Viacom and since I use YouTube I definately have to put in my two cents. First, like many students, I take Google's side. Even though copyrighted material is going on the website, Google is adhering to Viacom's requests to take some postings down. In addition, it is viewers and not Google who puts these videos up. Secondly, even though ad revenue comes from watching these videos, the added publicity given from watching YouTube undoubtedly provides Viacom with an edge. Some viewers may see a given episode of South Park and maybe wonder what the show is all about. They next hop onto YouTube and watch a few episodes and, subsequently, are now watching this show each week on Viacom TV networks. Viacom is just looking for a way to make a few bucks and take all the fun away from viewers like me.

i'm on a roll tonight

I edited the Wikipedia page for Thomas', the brand that makes the bagels and english muffins. I chose this article because I am absolutely addicted to Bagelbread, which Thomas' produces. Future posts will concentrate on this amazing food.

...just a comment

I was reading over one of my classmate's blogs, and I noticed he was writing about online gambling. This interests me because I have engaged in poker online, but never for money. I've seen many instances where college students have gotten addicted and lost alot of money. I think that the World Series of Poker has lost popularity, so I hope that these gambling addictions among college students will stop.

....

My blog was looking pretty boring, so I added some flair to it. I hope it looks better now.

This week's edit.

I have made yet another edit on Wikipedia, on the article Friday Night Lights (Tv Series). As the series goes on I will continue to update information to keep the article as current as possible.

Monday, February 26, 2007

clickz

I was looking over one of the required blog postings and I came across this article about how McDonald's is promoting their Filet O' Fish during the Christians observance of Lent, a time in which meat is limited or eliminated from one's diet altogether for nearly six weeks. Mobile phone users can access additional content and even play games from their phone by texting FOF (FOF 1 for Hispanic customers) to 37438. The article stood out to me because I am Christian, and although I'm not completely limiting meat from my diet I saw this marketing campaign as a great idea .

Another edit

I made my second edit in wikipedia, this time to the Friday Night Lights (Tv Series) article. If you want to check the history look for the username Nautica0613. I just updated a few things about the characters in the series. Check it out.
